FREELANCING

Wikio Experts is looking for freelance writers to write 400-word articles on a wide range of topics. You will get paid £4-£15 per article and if consistently good will have an opportunity to earn more. Deadline September 30. Full details here.

The Meteor, a new ‘humorous news blog’ due to launch soon, is looking for writers and journalists to contribute original news stories and ‘put a humorous spin’ on the day’s news. The site currently has no budget so you will not be paid. Deadline August 28. Full details here.

INTERNSHIPS, WORK EXPERIENCE AND APPRENTICESHIPS

Freelance journalist Janet Murray is offering a unique opportunity to an aspiring journalist of school-leaving age. You will be based in the south east and work with Janet four days a week, helping her to research and write articles for a wide range of publications, and will spend one day a week at college in Harlow – where you can study for an NCTJ Preliminary Certificate. You will be paid £6.08/hour. CNN.com is hiring a full-time paid intern (minimum wage) for 3 months to work on its Digital Features/Special Projects desk in London. Your main role will be researching and fact-checking, although opportunities to write and conduct interviews will be given to high achievers. Full details here. Deadline September 5, 10am.

The Times is looking for interns for one-week placements in their Fashion department. Your main role will be organising the fashion cupboard and assisting the editorial team and on shoots. Ongoing recruitment- apply asap. Full details here.

Strategy Eye is looking for two technology-savvy interns to research and write stories. You will be paid minimum wage and will work from central London. No journalism experience is necessary but you must have sharp writing skills and be willing to learn. Full details here. Deadline September 1.

COMPETITIONS

National Geographic magazine is running a travel writing competition for 18-23-year-olds. You can win a four-week trip to China and the chance to write a feature on the experience which could be published in the magazine. To enter, write 400-500 on an ‘inspirational travel experience’. The PTC New Talent Awards are now taking entries in the Most Promising Student Journalist of the Year undergraduate and postgraduate categories. If you are a current student or recent graduate of a PTC-accredited course you can enter here.
