The look the President was aiming for
Laurence Tidy writes for The Cambridge Student on a petition to remove the president of the University of Birmingham’s Christian Union after he ‘blacked-up’ for a party:
A petition has been launched calling for the resignation of Ben McNeely, the President of University of Birmingham Christian Union (UBCU), after photos of him appeared on Facebook with blacked up skin at a Caribbean-themed party.
The Birmingham Ethnic Minorities Association (BEMA) obtained photos (one of which is shown above) of McNeely in “Bob Marley attire” on 29 August. BEMA responded with an article on their WordPress site and launched a petition asking McNeely to “resign and make a public apology”. Endorsed by NUS Black Students Campaign and Unite Against Fascism, the article has received over 5,000 hits so far, and the petition has gained over a hundred signatures.
